Throwback Breakdown: September 18, 2010

Hi everyone, Drake known online as Urtar Reviews here, and man it's been a while. I decided to bring back a series I started back on Rate Your Music when I actually used that site, and continued for a while on this blog. But the last post I made was in late 2022. It was similar to Mark from Spectrum Pulse's Billboard Breakdown series, but for Hot 100 weeks from the past, and I decided to start with 2010, which I had yet to even finish. But anyway, we are continuing 2010's Throwback Breakdown with September 18, 2010. On to our top 10!:

The Top 10: We have a new #1 this week with Teenage Dream by Katy Perry overtaking Love The Way You Lie by Eminem and Rihanna down to #2. Good. Dynamite by Taio Cruz holds steady at #3. Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars rises two spots up to #4, pushing I Like It by Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull and DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love by Usher and Pitbull to #5 and #6 respectively. Mine by Taylor Swift rises two spots to #7. Take It Off by Kesha rises to #8. Next we have a new entry to the top 10, Just A Dream by Nelly. California Gurls by Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg drops three spots to #10.

Significant losses, dropouts, and gains (and starting now I will be covering any losses or gains of 5 or greater not just 10): To start off our losses, The Only Exception by Paramore drops to 34. All About Tonight by Blake Shelton goes down to 61. Erase Me by Kid Cudi and Kanye West gets erased down to 62. Little White Church by Little Big Town falls down to 64. My Kinda Party by Jason Aldean falls off its debut to 65, which despite being one of his better songs I've heard (not saying much) I am still happy to see because fuck Jason Aldean. Unfortunately the absolutely incredible Free by Zac Brown Band drops to 67. Lover, Lover by Jerrod Niemann falls to 73. Bittersweet by Fantasia becomes real down to 81. Ride by Ciara and Ludacris crashes at 84. Kissin U by Miranda Cosgrove drops to 86. The Man Who Can't Be Moved by The Script moves at 91. Somebody To Love by Justin Bieber and Usher falls to 92. Finally, My First Kiss by 3OH!3 and Kesha goes poorly down to 93. In terms of dropouts, the only ones worth mentioning are Rock That Body by Black Eyed Peas clenching a Year End spot and 143 by Bobby Brackins and Ray J. falling short. To start off our gains, Bottoms Up by Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj rises up big to 20. So does Like A G6 by Far East Movement, DEV, and The Cataracts up to 21. Secrets by One Republic is revealed up to 29. Fuck You by CeeLo Green rises massively up 33 off its debut. Letting Go (Dutty Love) by Sean Kingston and Nicki Minaj rises to 40. 2012 (It Ain't The End) by Jay Sean and Nicki Minaj rises to 49. King Of Anything by Sara Bareilles climbs to 51. Gettin' Over You by David Guetta, Chris Willis, Fergie, and LMFAO, a song I like a lot more than I probably should, rises to 76. Glitter In The Air by P!nk gains to 77. The lead single from one of my favorite country albums I have ever heard, As She's Walking Away by Zac Brown Band and Alan Jackson rises to 78. Love Like Woe by The Ready Set gains to 85. Toot It And Boot It by YG rises to 87. Finally, Holding You Down (Goin In Circles) by Jazmine Sullivan gains to 88. The only return this week was Hold You (Hold Yuh) by Gyptian at 99.

New entries:

95. The Breath You Take - George Strait

George Strait is an artist that despite having heard of him, and apparently him being the biggest musician from the state of Texas ever, I haven't really heard much from him. But this is a really nice little country song about a father-son relationship and the father teaching his son that life is about savoring and remembering the parts of it you really enjoy and remembering them, because hard times will come. I'm a sucker for father-son songs in country and while not quite on the level of like Live Like We're Dying or Even Though I'm Leaving, this is still fantastic.

96. Only Prettier - Miranda Lambert
I like Miranda Lambert in general, even if I wouldn't say I love her overall, even though she has her good share of songs I love. But man this is not it. I actually like the lyrics even if I don't really get what they're about actually. But the reaching across party lines part is something I can get behind in 2024 where it feels like a civil war is brewing, I feel like we as a country need to remember that we are all Americans and sure we may not agree on everything, but that doesn't mean that we need to be so goddamn mean to each other online. But I'm sorry man, this song is just an absolute disaster musically. This is the worst I have ever heard Miranda sound vocally. She just sounds absolutely terrible. And that production is so goddamn compressed and just close to unlistenable. It's a shame because this song could have been pretty good but instead its pretty terrible.

100. Anything Like Me - Brad Paisley
This is a cute little song about Brad Paisley imagining what his newborn son will be like, and at the same time regretting things about his own childhood. Which I think works well. And this instrumental track is fantastic. I like this one.

Worst Of The Week is going to Only Prettier by Miranda Lambert, and Best Of The Week is going to The Breath You Take by George Strait. Thanks for reading. I'll see you next time.
