New entries:
100. Black And Yellow - Wiz Khalifa
Yeah I'm a big fan of this one still. The beat is fantastic, Wiz sounds amazing, but my favorite part is the black and yellow ad-libs. Just a banger.
97. Smoke A Little Smoke - Eric Church
Eric Church is an artist who even though I don't really listen to him all that much these days, I do like him a lot. And this is pretty good, even if I have heard better from him. The guitar line here goes hard, and Eric's vocals are great as usual. Lyrically, it's pretty basic and nothing special, just about him smoking. But it sounds really good so yeah I do like this.
96. Waiting For The End - Linkin Park
Linkin Park are a band I like more than most metal-adjacent music, even if a lot of their heavier stuff like Crawling doesn't work for me. But some of their lighter music really works for me. And, while not quite on the level of songs like Numb or In The End, I do really like this one. The lyrics about the end of a relationship are well written, Chester and Mike sound great, but I think my favorite part about this is the production. It's very well mixed and sounds amazing, especially the piano during the intro. Great song.
94. Turn On The Radio - Reba McEntire
Reba McEntire is an artist that despite having heard of her, and I have probably heard several of her big hits before, I don't really know her music by name. And honestly, given what I've heard about her, I was expecting more from this. The lyrics are fine, but nothing special. And the instrumental is fine for what it is. But where I think I was disappointed is in Reba's vocals. She just doesn't sound good here, and really holds this song back for me. So yeah, not a big fan.
91. All I Want Is You - Miguel, J. Cole
So look, I'm not a huge R&B fan, it's just not my genre, but I do like some of the Miguel songs I've heard, like Sure Thing, Adorn, Sky Walker, and especially Coffee which deserved to be so much bigger in 2015. But all those songs have a lot more pulse in the production, which I much prefer personally. This kind of downbeat R&B without much pulse just doesn't really do much for me. So yeah, I'm not the target audience for this song, I will admit that. And I'm not a big fan of it.
83. We No Speak Americano - Yolanda Be Cool, Dcup
This is just such a weird novelty of a song. A song by an Australian band and producer that samples an Italian song from the 60s. And it's fine for what it is, a novelty, the beat is serviceable, but I would never choose to listen to this in my own time. Not a big fan.
82. Put You In A Song - Keith Urban
I don't like Keith Urban. He's not a good singer, and I have never been impressed by his songs lyrically either. And oh boy, do I not like this song. The instrumental is fine i guess, but Keith Urban sounds horrible, and is horribly mixed in the song as well. But the real issue is the fucking lyrical conceit. You could argue that it's similar to Cruise by Florida Georgia Line and Nelly, a song I still like, but FGL were just saying that the women they're with reminded them of a song, and they loved them so much they wanted to sing. Which is a normal and not creepy thing. But Keith Urban saying he wishes he could put his girl inside a song and turn her up while he's driving is just like nowhere near as romantic as he probably thinks it is. And kinda creepy to me? So yeah I hated this.
74. Can't Be Friends - Trey Songz
Ugh, I don't like Trey Songz. Say Aah is one of the worst hits of 2010, and while I do like Bottoms Up, all of his other hits are terrible (except maybe Slow Motion). And wow, that is some painfully bad autotune that makes him sound a lot like my favorite artist, Chris Brown. He sounds absolutely awful on this song. And is being an asshole in the lyrics yay. My favorite. Terrible song.
37. Radioactive - Kings Of Leon
So I fucking hate Use Somebody. It has some of the worst production of the entire 2000s to my ears. Literally sounds like it was recorded in a cave. And well, this is so much better. Because it actually sounds like it was recorded in a studio, not in a cave 50 miles underground. I'm not even like a huge fan of this, it's a pretty solid rock song but nothing I'd seek out.
Well, that was this week. Worst of The Week is going to Can't Be Friends by Trey Songz, with Dishonorable Mention to Put You In A Song by Keith Urban. Best Of The Week is going to Waiting For The End by Linkin Park, with Honorable Mention a tie between Black And Yellow by Wiz Khalifa and Smoke A Little Smoke by Eric Church. Thanks for reading! I'll see you next time.
10. Snooze - SZA I think recently SZA finally clicked for me. I haven't tested that yet by going back to her Ctrl era hits since my 2017 best list. Maybe it's just that I like her hits this year more than them, or maybe lately I've been busier and tired more often and more in the mood for downbeat R&B like this, but Kill Bill was one of the last cuts from the list, and Low would have been even higher if it was eligible. This song just did a good job calming me down through this stressful year. SZA's voice just sounds so comforting and smooth, the pitch shifting is fantastic and the beat is just upbeat enough to be catchy and for the song to have rhythm while also laid back enough to be calming. Before I listened to Low as a recommendation from my friends I considered this my favorite SZA song I'd heard, and between the songs I've heard it I actually want to listen to SOS at some point which I never thought I'd say. 9. Cruel Summer - Taylor Swift Some ...
10. Gimme That - Chris Brown Yay. My favorite artist. Chris brown unfortunately had a big year in 2006, and I don't like all but one of those hits at all. This isn't even the worst one (we'll get to that later). It's just Chris Brown creeping on women. My favorite. And doing it over a really stiff and annoying beat, and sounding awful doing it. His autotune has aged so poorly. Don't have more to say. 9. Ms. New Booty - Bubba Sparxxx, Ying Yang Twins, Mr. Colipark This is on the list entirely for that fucking atrocious beat that sounds like a siren and the annoying vocal effects that sound horrible. Other than that the song is fine, but those two elements completely ruin it. 8. Beep - Pussycat Dolls, Will.i.am/ Buttons - Pussycat Dolls The Pussycat Dolls fucking suck, or at least that's the impression I have gotten from their hits. The best of them is probably Stickwitchu which is like, okay at best. And while these two songs are not as bad as When I Grow U...
Hey everyone, been a while, but Drake, known online as Urtar Reviews here and today I am doing another worst list for 2003! My birth year! So how good an overall year for pop music do I think 2003 was? I think it might be my least favorite year of the 2000s decade for pop music. Not to say it's a terrible year, in fact there's a fair amount of songs I adore as we'll see on the best list. But the bad stuff really drags it down. Let's get into it! Before I listened to this list, I did not realize that Natasha Bedingfield's brother had hits. Years before her first song hit the Hot 100. I was totally fine not knowing that because... 10. If You're Not The One - Daniel Bedingfield Snore. Snore. I am someone who has a soft spot for late 90s and early 2000's ballads like this. And this still is so goddamn boring to me. Daniel Bedingfield is such a boring singer that just has such little personality. And the instrumentation is also boring. And the lyrics are kinda ...
