My Top 20 Favorite Hit Songs of 2020 Part 1 20-11
Hey everyone, Drake, known online as Urtar Reviews here, and today we're gonna look at 10 of my top 20 Favorite Hit Songs of 2020!
20. The Bones - Maren Morris (Peak #12, Billboard Year End: #9, Pulse Jan-Dec: #11, Crownnote: #21)
This song is interesting, because it was originally written about a relationship that is having issues, but despite that is staying together, and released as an album track on Maren Morris's 2019 album GIRL. But it was released as a single in late 2019, and eventually became huge throughout 2020 as a song many came to for comfort and helping us believe that we could make it through the pandemic. In fact, it ended up becoming one of only a few songs to make the top 10 of a Billboard Year End list without ever hitting the top 10 on the weekly charts. Also interesting is that I didn't love this song back when the pandemic was going on, I thought it was good but it just never clicked until recently. Anyway, it's just a fantastic pop country song, I love the piano (I think?) and guitar and just whole beach vibe of the instrumental. And Maren glides over it very well. I imagine this song makes great beach music (I've never listened to it at the beach) And the lyrics are well written. The optimistic nature of the song is very appealing and comforting. Also I heard the Hozier remix for the first time recently through the speakers where I work, and it's also good.
19. Lemonade - Internet Money, Gunna, Don Toliver, NAV (Peak #6, Billboard Year End: N/A, Pulse Jan-Dec: #48, Crownnote: #41)
I don't have much to say about this one, it's just a vibe and a half. This song went off when I was in Hawaii last year. And it's still a banger when you're not at a beach. The melodies are just bliss.
18. One Of Them Girls - Lee Brice (Peak #17, Billboard Year End: #68, Pulse Jan-Dec: #51, Crownnote: #46)
I've seen some comparisons of this song to Take Your Time by Sam Hunt, people saying that it's in the similar category of acting like he's better than those other guys bothering the girl at the bar and he's actually good, when he is actually just like the other guys. And I heavily disagree. First of all, this song actually sounds amazing unlike Take Your Time. Second, he literally mentions how she's got a wall he's gotta knock down to this girl! Third the upbeat tone of this song makes the song come off a lot less creepy than the menacing downbeat tone of Take Your Time. This is just a really fun, great sounding country song, nothing more, nothing less.
17. Dior - Pop Smoke (Peak #22, Billboard Year End: #83, Pulse Jan-Dec: #79, Crownnote: #84)
The only Pop Smoke Year End hit that was released when he was alive (although it only charted on the Hot 100 after his death) So it's no surprise this is my favorite of them. Heck there was a time this would have made my top 10, but it has faded some for me. Especially after I discovered his song Mannequin that kinda took over this song's spot in my listening. Still a fantastic drill song that shows off Smoke's menace in a fantastic way. And the beat is impeccable.
16. Positions - Ariana Grande (Peak #1, Billboard Year End: N/A, Pulse Jan-Dec: #86, Crownnote: #54)
Just a really hot sex song that also just shows off Ari's vocal chops. It is kinda hard to understand what she's saying, but when her voice sounds this beautiful and hot, who cares? And the instrumental bangs. Not more to say really.
15. Bluebird - Miranda Lambert (Peak #26, Billboard Year End: #91, Pulse Jan-Dec: #88, Crownnote: #89)
Yeah there's a lot of country on this list so far and there will be more too. Anyway, this is a song about how Miranda is trying to just remain optimistic, and just move on from hardships and focus on the good things in life. Which is just really comforting. And I also just love the guitar line and strings.
14. Adore You - Harry Styles (Peak #6, Billboard Year End: #6, Pulse Jan-Dec: #7, Crownnote: #9)
Until the overplay on As It Was wears off, this will be my favorite Harry Styles hit. And even after it does, there is a chance it will remain that as well. The incredible guitar line and I think synths? Harry's great performance, he sounds so silky in the best way. His beautiful ah's. And the lyrics that are cute. Man this song is actually amazing when you're not hearing it twenty times a day.
13. Dynamite - BTS (Peak #1, Billboard Year End: #38, Pulse Jan-Dec: #21, Crownnote: #16)
I feel weird talking about BTS on this blog, considering I'm not very familiar with their actual Korean music, but I really do love both of their huge songs in English. This song is like musical caffeine, just full of energy. The harmonies are so good, the production rules, the melodies are amazing. This is just such a fun pop song. And it came along at a time when I needed one. But even past that it still rules.12. Say So - Doja Cat (Peak #1, Billboard Year End: #11, Pulse Jan-Dec: #10, Crownnote: #11)
Yet another one of Doja's pop "sellout" as she has called it, tracks that I just adore. Her charisma on this song is just infectious. The hook is smooth like butter (yes pun intended considering the last song), I love the energy of the verses, and the bubbly production is beautiful. The remix sucks ass though.
11. Supalonely - BENEE, Gus Dapperton (Peak #39, Billboard Year End: #84, Pulse Jan-Dec: #82, Crownnote: #81)
This song was an anthem of mine during the pandemic to help me come with being lonely, even with me having the company of the family and the fact that I am very shy and didn't have very many friends at school at the time anyway. I still felt lonely at times, and this song was an anthem of mine. Since then, it has lost some of its magic, especially since I have irl friends again. Still a fantastic pop song that echoes a feel of loneliness very well.
