2021 Best List Honorable Mentions

 

Hey everyone, Drake known online as Urtar Reviews here, and I said in my best list part 2 that I would be doing a seperate list for the Honorable Mentions, and here that is!


HM. Tombstone - Rod Wave

It's no Street Runner, which would be top 2 on the list if it were eligible but I still like this one a lot. 

HM. Things A Man Oughta Know - Lainey Wilson

Just a really well written country song. 


HM. Single Saturday Night - Cole Swindell

Would this my pick for Cole Swindell's first Year End hit when he had You Should Be Here in 2016 which was so close to making that Year End list and is a phenomenal ballad about missing your father, but I still like this a lot and I have no idea why.

HM. Cry Baby - Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby

This is my favorite Megan Thee Stallion hit of the year. That statement probably just caused a good amount of you to stop reading my lists. I do not care, I still love this song. If you're hating on this just for the possessed doll sound, which I do get, try and get past that because you might just enjoy it. 


HM. You Should Probably Leave - Chris Stapleton

This song's niches are covered better by Starting Over in terms of Chris Stapleton songs and by Leave Before You Love Me in terms of songs with a similar topic for me this year, but this is still great.


HM. Take My Breath - The Weeknd

Dawn FM just dropped last night at the time of writing and it was awesome. I like After Hours a bit more but it's pretty close. Anyway, Take My Breath even if not one of the best songs on the album, especially since the absolutely pointless extended version was the one on it rather than the superior original version, but it's still a really fun pop song. 


HM. Pepas - Farruko

Spanish music had a good year. 


HM. Thot Shit - Megan Thee Stallion

Hey, just because I prefer Cry Baby that doesn't mean I don't like this song a lot too. 


HM. Lil Bit - Nelly, Florida Georgia Line

Nelly and Florida Georgia Line saved the day by ending racism again like they did in 2013. Now we just need a Nelly and Florida Georgia Line collab album because that will end racism so hard that it can never come back. No but that's all a joke, the song is just really fun and how stupid it is is the charm, just like with the Cruise remix back in 2013. 


HM. Whoopty - CJ

Banger.


HM. Willow - Taylor Swift

This is one of the worst songs on her album Evermore. Yep, I'm not joking. 


HM. Good Days - SZA

I don't listen to this one very often but when I do it's amazing. 


HM. Shivers - Ed Sheeran

It was a grower. Also what the fuck is this music video?

HM. Wants And Needs - Drake, Lil Baby

I actually enjoyed all of Drake's hits this year aside from you know, THAT one. Anyway, this slaps. 

HM. Dakiti - Bad Bunny, Jhay Cortex

Spanish music had a good year [2]


HM. Wockesha - Moneybagg Yo

Wasn't expecting to mention this guy on a best list but he impressed me with this one. 


HM. Back In Blood - Pooh Shiesty, Lil Durk

Absolute banger. 


HM. Beautiful Mistakes - Maroon 5, Megan Thee Stallion

Booty Full Of Steaks is really good again now that radio isn't playing it fifteen times a day. 


HM. Calling My Phone - Lil Tjay, 6LACK

It vibes hard. 


HM. Way 2 Sexy - Drake, Future, Young Thug

This song is really good and yet it is the weaker of the two #1 hits that have sampled I'm Too Sexy the past ten years. 

HM. You Right - Doja Cat, The Weeknd

This was another grower. 


HM. 34+35 - Ariana Grande

Not as great as Positions which only didn't make my list proper because it actually debuted in 2020 by the Jan-Dec Year End lists. 

HM. Best Friend - Saweetie, Doja Cat

Banger. 


HM. What You Know Bout Love - Pop Smoke

This vibes, and of course, RIP Pop Smoke. 

HM. Up - Cardi B

Banger. 


HM. Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak)

This was the final cut from my top 20 and oh boy it was a painful one. Well, if Smokin Out The Window makes the Year End next year it'll make my top 10 for sure, so please make that happen America!


HM. Levitating - Dua Lipa, DaBaby

Original song is only good and not great but unfortunately DaBaby's verse makes the song so much better for me. Oh also, Love Again was ROBBED!


HM. Yonaguni - Bad Bunny

Spanish music had a good year this year [3]


HM. Pov - Ariana Grande

Positions is better, change my mind, but I still really like this one.

My Top 15 Favorite Hit Songs of 2003

  15. Harder To Breathe - Maroon 5  The first hit Maroon 5 ever had. And it sticks out to me as one of their best. Adam Levine sells how angry he is so goddamn well. Especially with how he literally sounds like he is running out of breath during the chorus. And the guitar and drum lines compliment him very well. Such a fantastic opener to Songs About Jane as well. Opens that album up with a bang. But also a killer song in itis own right.  14. It's Five O'clock Somewhere - Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffet  Despite the fact that I am not that much of a beach person despite being a Californian, I have a big soft spot for a lot of beach music. And this is one such song. Alan Jackson's warm deep voice fits the beach sound so well. And that guitar line is just so damn comforting. Jimmy Buffet's part is kinda pointless imo, but it's still enjoyable. Like if there is a nitpick I have with this song it's that he is all wondering what would Jimmy Buffet do in a moment like this...

My Top 20 Favorite Hit Songs of 2023 Part 2 (10-1)

  10. Snooze - SZA I think recently SZA finally clicked for me. I haven't tested that yet by going back to her Ctrl era hits since my 2017 best list. Maybe it's just that I like her hits this year more than them, or maybe lately I've been busier and tired more often and more in the mood for downbeat R&B like this, but Kill Bill was one of the last cuts from the list, and Low would have been even higher if it was eligible. This song just did a good job calming me down through this stressful year. SZA's voice just sounds so comforting and smooth, the pitch shifting is fantastic and the beat is just upbeat enough to be catchy and for the song to have rhythm while also laid back enough to be calming. Before I listened to Low as a recommendation from my friends I considered this my favorite SZA song I'd heard, and between the songs I've heard it I actually want to listen to SOS at some point which I never thought I'd say. 9.
